Conflict

The conflict for the book is Man vs. Man. Because the police (man) have to solve the mystery to find out who (man) murdered Ruby Keene.

Themes

I think one of the major themes in this book is You can't trust anyone. Because in this book its hard to choose who to trust and who not to trust. You can think that you trust someone, but then sometimes they just end up being guilty. At first I thought that one of the characters (I am not going to say any names to spoil it) was the guilty one, but they didn't have anything to do with the murder, it was a different person the whole time.

Setting

In Body in the Library the setting takes place in an English village called St. May Mead.  In this small village there many other settings like, The Majestic Hotel, Basil Blake's home, Gossington Hall-Home of Conol and Mrs. Bantry, the Police Station, and many more!

Body in the Library by Agatha Christie

In the book, Body in the Library, a body of a young, Blond girl is found in Gossington Hall (where the story begins.) The body seems to have been strangled, and put into the library to blame the owner of Gossington Hall, Conol Bantry. Conol Bantry is one of the many characters in this book, when he finds about the news about the young lady in his library he immediately calls the police to help solve this mystery. There are many suspects of to who could have killed this young woman. The suspects include: Josie Turner, Mark Gaskell, Basil Blake, Raymond Starr, George Bartlett. (there are many more but these are the main suspects the detectives accuse.)

It all starts at the beginning when servants of Gossington Hall find a young girl in the library of the home. She appears to be young, blond, and well dressed for the occasion she was at or going to. As the detectives are resolving on who the girl might be it narrows down to two girls: Ruby Keene and Pamela Reeves, but Pamela is young and
brunette. Josie Turner (one of the suspects) identifies the girl to be Ruby Keene, her cousin. Josie admits that Ruby was one dancing at the Majestic Hotel with her dance partner Raymond Starr. During Ruby's dance Josie tells that she had been playing cards with the old folk. After the dance Ruby went strait up to her room, where, after hadn't been seen for the rest of the night. Another item that hadn't been seen for the rest of the night was George Bartlett's car. Coincidence?

The detectives interview Bartlett and ask him where he was when this all happens. He has absolutely no motive to whether he committed the murder. Although his car had been stolen that exact night Ruby went missing. Moving more ahead into the story,
another body is found in George Bartlett's car. The car has been burned to burn evidence. The body in the car is Pamela Reeves, or so it seems to be.

Going back to the part where I was, George Bartlett's car was stolen the night of Ruby Keene's absence, Ruby was well known to be with the fame and fortunate, which brings us to another suspect, Basil Blake. He is a famous man in the film industry. He claims that he had nothing to do with the murder of Ruby, and he is right, he had nothing to do with it.

With now two bodies in the mystery Miss Marple (the main detective) finds it harder and harder to find the real murderer. She knows who it is, but wants to be able to show evidence before she can reveal the true murderer.

Now lets switch gears to Ruby Keene, Conway Jefferson, and Mark Gaskell. Ruby Keene is, basically an orphan. Conway Jefferson wants to adopt the young girl and give all of his fortune to her. Mark Gaskell on the other hand is completely against this decision. Mark Gaskell says to the detectives that "He would strangle Ruby Keene if he could." This gives lots of lee way to Mark as the murderer. Mark Gaskell comes to play in this because Conway Jefferson lives with Mark for the past year or so. Mark disagrees with Jefferson's decision to make Ruby Keene heir to the inheritance.

Alright, so now there are two bodies and one has been burned and one has been strangled. All the suspects have been interviewed for their alibis, and now Miss Marple is putting pieces together like a puzzle. The body in the Library is NOT Ruby Keene, it is Pamela Reeves. The murderer must have dyed Pamela's hair blond to confuse the two girls. Who could be the murderer? I have given you all the clues I can possibly give with out spoiling the ending.
